When your hand hurts, simple tasks like typing, cooking, or buttoning a shirt start to feel harder. A hand doctor treats conditions of the hand, wrist, and forearm. Some hand doctors train in orthopedic surgery, and others come from plastic or general surgery backgrounds. Here are some warning signs and the next step for each situation:

Persistent Pain

Short-term soreness after heavy use is normal, but if the pain lasts for weeks, it may point to an underlying problem. Rest and ice help with minor strains, but they do little for tendon or joint damage. Pain spreading into the forearm also requires a closer look.

Pain at the base of the thumb signals arthritis, and pain on the wrist’s thumb side may suggest tendinitis. Night pain is another warning sign. Pain that wakes you from sleep typically involves inflammation or nerve pressure. For some people, grinding or clicking during movement adds useful clues.

When your pain starts, track what makes it worse and how long it lasts. Your notes give the hand doctor helpful details, and they make the first visit more focused. Bring the log to your appointment.

Lost Grip

A weak grip makes daily tasks awkward, and it often develops slowly over weeks or months. Since the change happens gradually, many people adjust their habits without noticing. Watch for these specific signs:

  • Dropping cups, keys, or phones more often
  • Opening jars or turning doorknobs gets harder
  • Having difficulty holding a pen for more than a few minutes
  • Pinching small objects like coins or buttons becomes weak

When grip loss appears alongside pain, the cause may involve tendons, nerves, or joints. A hand doctor measures grip strength with a small handheld device. The test takes only a few minutes, and the results help guide the next steps. Your scores also serve as a baseline for later visits.

Numb or Tingly Sensation

Numbness and tingling may involve the nerves. Carpal tunnel affects the thumb, index, and middle fingers, but cubital tunnel affects the ring and pinky fingers. If shaking your hand relieves the tingling, nerve compression is a likely cause. Symptoms often get worse at night or during long drives.

Occasional tingling after sleeping on your arm is normal, but daily symptoms deserve attention. Long-term nerve pressure may lead to muscle weakness in the hand. A hand doctor may order a nerve conduction study, which measures how fast signals travel through your nerves. The test uses small electrical pulses and takes about an hour.

Visible Deformities

When your hand changes shape, the cause typically lies in the joints or tendons. Some changes develop over years, and others appear right after an injury. Look for these visible signs:

  • A swollen or knobby finger joint
  • A finger stuck in a bent position
  • A firm lump on the wrist or palm
  • A finger drifting toward the pinky side

A sudden deformity after a fall needs prompt attention. If a finger looks crooked after an injury, visit an urgent care center or emergency room the same day. Providers there take X-rays, and many refer patients to a hand specialist for follow-up. A delay of several days may let a broken bone heal out of line.

Schedule a Hand Doctor Appointment

Many hand specialists accept direct appointments, but some insurance plans require a referral first. Call your insurance provider to check your plan’s rules and costs. When you book the visit, bring your symptom log, a list of medications, and any past imaging.
