The Long-Term Benefits of Mohs Micrographic Surgery for Skin Health
SHARE

Mohs Micrographic Surgery is a specialized technique used to treat skin cancer, usually basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. During the procedure, a surgeon removes visible cancer in thin layers. They examine each layer under a microscope before deciding whether to remove more; this gives the surgeon a detailed view of where cancer cells remain. Here are some long-term benefits of Mohs surgery:

High Cure Rates

Mohs surgery is known for its success rates in treating skin cancer, and it preserves as much healthy tissue as possible. For basal cell carcinoma, cure rates with Mohs surgery are around 99%. When cancer returns after earlier treatment, cure rates are about 94%. These figures reflect how the technique checks tissue margins.

In a standard excision, a lab typically examines a small sample of the margin. Mohs works differently. The surgeon evaluates the complete edge and base of each removed layer, so cancer cells extending beyond the visible tumor are less likely to be missed.

Individual results depend on the tumor’s type, size, and location. Your dermatologist will review these factors with you and explain how they apply to your situation. Ask about follow-up skin checks too; anyone with a history of skin cancer has a higher chance of developing a new one.

Healthy Tissue Preservation

During Mohs Micrographic Surgery, the surgeon maps and examines each tissue layer, so they remove tissue only where cancer is found. Traditional excision often involves cutting a fixed margin of normal-appearing skin around the tumor to account for cells not visible to the eye. With Mohs, that extra margin is usually smaller.

This matters in areas where skin is thin, or tissue is limited. The nose, eyelids, lips, ears, and fingers have little extra skin to spare. Removing more than needed may affect how these areas look and work. Preserving tissue around the eyelid helps protect normal blinking and eye closure. On the lips, it helps maintain shape and movement for speaking and eating.

Minimal Scarring

When less tissue is removed, the resulting wound is generally smaller, and smaller wounds tend to leave smaller scars. The surgeon chooses a repair method based on the wound’s size and location. Options include letting it heal naturally, closing it with stitches, or using a skin flap or graft. Some patients have reconstruction on the same day as their surgery. Support wound healing by keeping it clean, following your care instructions closely, and protecting the area from the sun with clothing or a broad-spectrum sunscreen. Scar appearance still varies from person to person based on skin type, age, and the surgery site.

Learn More About Mohs Micrographic Surgery

Mohs Micrographic Surgery combines detailed tissue analysis with targeted removal, which contributes to its cure rates, tissue preservation, and smaller scars. It is not the right choice for every skin cancer, and your dermatologist will explain whether you are a candidate. Write down your questions before your visit, including details about recovery time, repair options, and follow-up care. Schedule a consultation with a Mohs surgeon today to discuss your diagnosis and treatment options.
