The Role of Genetics in Colon Cancer Screening
SHARE

Colon cancer is a common form of cancer affecting adults, and it can develop slowly over a number of years. People who develop it may not notice any signs during the early stages, which is why routine testing plays such a large role in health maintenance for those with a family history of colon cancer. Colon cancer screening gives doctors a way to look for changes in the colon before symptoms appear. When abnormal tissue is found early, it can be examined and addressed sooner rather than later.

What Is Colon Cancer Screening?

Colon cancer screening refers to a group of tests used to check the large intestine, also called the colon, and the rectum for early signs of cancer or growths that may lead to it. These growths are known as polyps. Not every polyp becomes cancerous, but some do over time. Screening allows medical professionals to locate and remove polyps before they have the chance to develop further.

The main purpose of screening is detection. Early changes in the colon rarely cause noticeable discomfort, so screening is offered to people who feel healthy and have no obvious symptoms. By checking the colon at regular intervals, doctors can track its condition and respond to any findings in a timely manner. Screening is a routine part of preventive care rather than a response to an existing problem.

Who Should Screening Be Sought?

Guidelines generally recommend that adults begin colon cancer screening at age 45, but the appropriate starting point may vary from person to person. A doctor can help determine the right timing based on individual health history and other factors. Some people may need to begin earlier or undergo testing more frequently than the standard schedule suggests. Several factors can raise a person’s likelihood of developing colon cancer, including:

  • Personal or family history of colon cancer or polyps
  • Certain inherited conditions that affect the colon
  • Prior history of inflammatory bowel disease, such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis
  • Lifestyle-related factors, including a diet low in fiber, limited physical activity, smoking, or heavy alcohol use
  • Advancing age, since risk tends to increase over time

People who notice ongoing changes in bowel habits, unexplained weight loss, blood in the stool, or persistent abdominal discomfort should speak with a doctor. While these signs do not confirm the presence of cancer, they are worth discussing with a medical professional who can recommend the appropriate next steps.

What Does It Involve?

There are several methods for screening, and the right choice depends on personal preference, health history, and a doctor’s guidance. Each approach has its own schedule and level of preparation. Colonoscopy is one of the most widely used methods. During this procedure, a doctor uses a thin, flexible tube with a camera to view the inside of the colon. If polyps are found, they can often be removed during the same appointment. Preparation usually involves clearing the bowel beforehand.

Stool-based tests offer a less involved option. These tests examine a sample of stool for hidden blood or altered DNA that may point to abnormal changes; they can often be completed at home. A flexible sigmoidoscopy examines the lower portion of the colon using a similar camera-equipped instrument. If any of these tests reveal something unusual, a follow-up colonoscopy may be recommended for a closer look.

Meet With a Gastroenterologist

A gastroenterologist is a doctor who specializes in the digestive system, including the colon. Meeting with one gives you the opportunity to discuss your health background, and you can learn which screening method fits your situation. These specialists may explain how often testing is needed and what each option requires.
