Exploring Non-surgical Treatments for Chronic Hip Pain
SHARE

Chronic hip pain impacts the hip joint and lasts at least three months; some common causes include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fractures, and tendinitis. Repetitive daily movements may also cause hip overuse and gradual joint wear. Because surgery involves recovery time and potential risks, orthopedic specialists often recommend non-surgical options first. These treatments help some patients manage symptoms and stay active. Here’s more information on non-surgical treatments for chronic hip pain:

Joint Injections

Joint injections deliver medication directly into or near the hip joint. This is why physicians use ultrasound or X-ray guidance to place the needle accurately. Injections are often combined with physical therapy, activity changes, or other conservative treatments. Corticosteroids are anti-inflammatory medications. When injected into the hip, they target inflammation within the joint or the surrounding bursa.

Some patients notice hip pain relief within a few days, but others may need more time to see a change. The length of any relief varies from person to person. Doctors usually limit the number of corticosteroid injections a patient receives each year. A hip injection is an outpatient procedure that usually takes less than 30 minutes. For this treatment, the provider cleans the skin and may apply a local anesthetic to numb the area. Using imaging guidance, the physician inserts a thin needle and injects the medication.

Hyaluronic Acid Injections

Hyaluronic acid is a substance found naturally in joint fluid; it helps lubricate the joint and absorb shock during movement. In people with osteoarthritis, the concentration of hyaluronic acid in the joint may decrease. Hyaluronic acid injections, also called viscosupplementation, aim to supplement this fluid. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved these injections for knee osteoarthritis. Their use in the hip is still defined as off-label. Some physicians offer them for hip osteoarthritis; others recommend different options based on current research.

Walking Aids

Walking aids can reduce the load on a painful hip during daily activities, and you typically hold a cane in the hand opposite the affected hip. Some common options include:

  • Canes
  • Crutches
  • Walkers

This position may help shift weight away from the painful side with each step. A cane offers light support, and a walker provides greater stability. Walkers are often suggested for people with balance concerns or more significant pain. A physical therapist can help you select the appropriate device and adjust it to the correct height.

Vitamin Injections and Supplements

Certain nutrients support bone and joint health; vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, which contributes to bone strength. People with low vitamin D levels may receive oral supplements or, in some cases, injections. A blood test can show whether your levels fall within the normal range.

Some people with hip pain also take glucosamine or chondroitin supplements, but studies on these supplements are ongoing. Omega-3 fatty acids and turmeric are other supplements that people sometimes use. Because supplements can interact with prescription medications, talk with your doctor before starting any new product.

Address Your Hip Pain With an Orthopedic Specialist

Chronic hip pain has many possible causes, but the appropriate treatment depends on your diagnosis, activity level, and overall health. An orthopedic specialist can perform a physical exam and review your medical history to determine your options. Your specialist can then explain the available non-surgical options and what each one involves. If conservative treatments do not provide enough relief, your doctor may discuss other options, including surgery. Schedule an appointment with an orthopedic specialist to learn more about managing your hip pain.
