Integrating Pain Management Techniques for Holistic Healing
SHARE

Some pain starts suddenly after an injury, and other kinds linger for months. Since pain affects sleep, mood, and daily tasks, many providers combine several techniques into one plan. This approach treats the whole person, not just a single symptom. Here is more information on holistic pain management techniques:

Lifestyle Modifications

When pain limits your movement, small daily changes may reduce strain on your body. These changes work alongside pain management treatment. Your provider may suggest specific habits, or a physical therapist may design a routine for you. Typical lifestyle adjustments include the following:

  • Gentle exercise, such as walking, swimming, or light stretching
  • Balanced diet with leafy greens, berries, and fatty fish
  • Steady sleep schedule of adequate hours each night
  • Consistent weight management to lower pressure on your knees, hips, and back

Start with one or two changes, and track your pain levels each week. If a new activity increases your pain, stop and tell your provider. A pain journal helps you and your provider spot patterns over time. Changes like these take time, so give each habit a few weeks.

Lidocaine Infusions

Lidocaine is a local anesthetic used to numb nerves. During an infusion, a provider delivers a measured dose through an IV while a nurse monitors your heart rate. The process is typically short, and most patients stay awake throughout. Patients might return home the same day after a short observation period.

Providers sometimes use lidocaine for nerve pain, and some patients receive it for fibromyalgia. Other uses include certain types of headaches and complex regional pain syndrome. Since responses differ from person to person, your provider will review your history before scheduling an infusion. Lidocaine infusions do not suit every type of pain.

Some people notice mild side effects after the infusion ends. Examples include dizziness, a metallic taste, or numbness around the mouth; these typically pass within hours. Tell your care team about any heart conditions or medication allergies beforehand. Patients with certain heart rhythm problems may not qualify for this treatment.

Opioids and Medications

Medications form one part of many pain management plans. Over-the-counter options include acetaminophen and ibuprofen, and prescription options include muscle relaxants and nerve pain drugs. Your provider chooses a medication based on where your pain comes from and how long it lasts. Some plans pair a daily anti-inflammatory with physical therapy, but others rely on medication only during flare-ups.

Opioids such as oxycodone and hydrocodone are typically reserved for severe, short-term pain because they carry risks. These drugs may cause drowsiness and constipation, and long-term use raises the risk of dependence. Follow your prescription label and your provider’s directions closely. If you have questions about a dose, call your pharmacist or provider.

Schedule Pain Management Services

Pain management often combines several techniques, and your plan may change over time. When you meet with a provider, you can discuss which approach fits your situation.  Bring a list of your current medications and allergies to your visit, and if you keep a pain journal, share it with your care team. Schedule a consultation online, or you can call our office for available times.
