Tips for a Smooth Tummy Tuck Recovery
SHARE

A tummy tuck is a surgical procedure, and recovery requires planning. Your recovery steps depend on your procedure type. A full abdominoplasty removes excess skin and fatty tissue; a modified or mini-abdominoplasty targets fat below the navel. Because each procedure differs, your surgeon will tailor your instructions.

Preparing Your Home

Preparation before tummy tuck surgery can simplify your first days at home. Have an adult drive you home, and they can stay with you afterward. Place daily items at waist height to avoid bending or reaching. After you return home, you may walk slightly bent, and low chairs will be hard to use. Choose a sturdy chair with armrests for sitting and standing. Set up a dedicated recovery space before your procedure. Keep your phone, charger, water bottle, and any medications within arm’s reach. Clear pathways so you can move safely without twisting or straining. If you have pets or young children, arrange for help managing them during your first week. Gather your supplies before your surgery date. Useful items include:

  • Extra pillows: Use them to support your body in a comfortable, elevated position.
  • Loose clothing that opens in front: Front-opening tops are easier to put on and take off without raising your arms or stretching your abdomen.
  • Prescribed medications: Fill your prescriptions in advance, and keep them near your bed or recliner.
  • Specific wound-care items: Stock up on gauze, medical tape, and any other supplies your surgeon recommends.
  • Easy-to-reach needs: Keep a water bottle, phone charger, and your surgeon’s contact information close by.

Caring for Your Incision

Your surgical area will be stitched and bandaged after the procedure. Keep the bandage clean and dry, and change it only as directed. Review all bandage care instructions with your provider before you leave the facility. Ask your provider which cleaning solution to use and how often to change the dressing. Although bathing rules vary by surgeon, your provider will explain when you can shower, and you should follow that timeline.

When you do shower, avoid directing water pressure directly at the incision. Pat the area dry gently with a clean towel, and do not rub. Watch the incision site closely in the days after surgery. Contact your provider if you notice increased redness, swelling, warmth, or drainage at the incision.

Managing Activity and Rest

Rest is part of recovery, but light movement also matters. Your surgeon may recommend short walks soon after surgery, and starting slowly is key. Begin with brief walks around your home, and increase your distance only as your comfort allows. Ask your provider how often to walk and how to pace yourself. While you heal, avoid lifting anything heavier than your surgeon permits. Ask your provider for a specific weight limit and write it down before you leave. Do not resume structured exercise until your surgeon gives you written clearance. Returning to activity too soon can strain your incision, and it sometimes affects your results.

Schedule a Tummy Tuck Consultation

A smooth recovery starts with a clear plan. Prepare your home, follow wound and garment instructions, and balance rest with approved movement. Your surgeon knows the details of your procedure, and they can answer your specific questions. Write down your questions about drains, garments, and activity limits before your visit. Schedule a consultation, and bring your recovery questions with you.
