Navigating Fungal Nail Pain and Treatments
SHARE

Fungal nails affect the toenails of many people; the fungus lives under and around the nail, and it grows slowly over several months. As the infection spreads, the nail may turn yellow, thicken, or crumble at the edges. Thick nails press against shoes and cause pain during daily walking. This is how to control fungal nail pain and symptoms:

Applying Antifungal Cream

When an infection is mild, your podiatrist may start with a topical antifungal cream or liquid. You apply the product directly to the affected fungal nails and the surrounding skin. Most products require daily use for several months, and skipping doses slows progress. Follow these steps for each application:

  • Wash and dry your feet thoroughly, including between the toes.
  • Trim and gently file the nail surface.
  • Apply a thin layer to the nail and the nearby skin.
  • Wash your hands after each use.

Taking Oral Medications

Oral antifungal pills treat the infection from inside the body, and they reach the nail through the bloodstream. In some cases, doctors may prescribe these medications when creams do not clear the infection. A typical course needs to be taken for several weeks.

These medications may cause side effects in some patients. Before you start treatment, your doctor may order a blood test to check liver function. Some people notice stomach upset or a rash, and others report headaches. Tell your doctor about any new symptoms during treatment.

Since the old nail must grow out, visible changes take several months to appear. The new nail grows in from the base, and the damaged section moves forward over time. Toenails grow slowly, so it takes time to be eliminated. Your podiatrist will track this growth at follow-up visits.

Getting Laser Treatment

Laser treatment uses focused light to heat the fungus under the nail. Each session is short, and most patients need several sessions. While the laser works, you may feel warmth or a mild pinprick sensation. The procedure requires no needles or numbing medication.

Since laser therapy is a modern option, many insurance plans may not cover it. Ask your clinic about pricing before your first visit. Some patients pair laser sessions with topical cream, or their podiatrist adds an oral medication. Results vary based on the depth and age of the infection.

Removing Nail (If Severe)

Some infections do not respond to other treatments, or the nail causes ongoing pain. In these cases, your podiatrist may recommend partial or full nail removal. After the doctor numbs your toe, they remove part or all of the damaged nail. Aftercare typically includes the following steps:

  • Keep the bandage clean until it begins to heal.
  • Soak the toe in warm salt water if your doctor advises it.
  • Wear loose or open-toed shoes during healing.
  • Apply antifungal medication to the nail bed as directed.

After nail removal, the healing process is needed to promote proper recovery and prevent further infection. While it may take several weeks for the toe to fully heal, following your doctor’s aftercare instructions, like soaking in warm salt water and wearing loose shoes, may significantly speed up the process and reduce discomfort.

Get Treatment for Fungal Nails

Fungal nails typically don’t clear up without treatment. If you notice thick, discolored, or painful nails, schedule an exam with a podiatrist. Your podiatrist will examine the nail, and they may take a small sample for lab testing. Contact a foot and ankle clinic today to book your appointment.
