What To Expect During a Prenatal Care Visit
SHARE

Prenatal care is the set of medical checkups you attend during pregnancy. Your provider tracks your health, and these visits follow a set schedule based on how many weeks along you are. When you know what happens at each appointment, you feel more prepared. Regular visits give your care team a clear picture of you and your baby.

Regular Monthly Appointments

During your first two trimesters, you attend one visit each month through week 28. Your provider measures your weight and blood pressure, and a nurse records your baseline numbers. Since early data matters, your first visit tends to be the longest. These monthly checkups build a steady record over time.

At each monthly appointment, your provider checks a few standard items. Since every pregnancy differs, your provider adjusts the plan to fit your needs. Prenatal care visits stay short when your results look normal, but questions may arise.  Here is what a typical monthly visit includes:

  • Weight and blood pressure readings
  • Urine samples for protein and sugar
  • Baby heartbeat check
  • Time for your questions

Write down your questions before you arrive, and bring the list with you. Your provider reviews any symptoms you report during the visit. When something needs follow-up, you get clear next steps.

More Frequent Visits

Around week 28, your schedule shifts to a visit every two weeks. Since the third trimester brings faster changes, these closer visits help your team spot concerns early. Your provider watches your blood pressure closely, and fundal height measurements track your baby’s growth.

At each biweekly visit, your provider measures your belly and listens to the heartbeat. The appointments stay brief, but they happen more often through week 36. Since your body is preparing for delivery, your provider may discuss labor signs with you.

Routine Screenings

Screenings are lab tests and checks scheduled at specific weeks. Your provider orders blood work early, and later tests check for gestational diabetes. Since timing affects accuracy, each screening happens within a set window. Routine screenings include:

  • Standard blood type
  • Complete blood count
  • Periodic glucose tests

Your provider reviews each result with you at the next visit. Some tests need a follow-up sample, but most return within a normal range. When a result falls outside that range, your provider explains the next step.

Diagnostic Ultrasounds

An ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of your baby; your provider schedules an early dating scan, followed by a detailed anatomy scan. Since these scans check specific features, the technician measures organs, limbs, and the placenta. Some pregnancies need extra ultrasounds beyond the standard two. The appointment is painless, but you may need a full bladder. Since the images guide your care plan, your provider reviews the findings with you directly.

Schedule Prenatal Care Near You

Knowing this schedule helps you plan your time and prepare your questions, and each visit adds to the record your care team relies on. Start your prenatal care early for a clear summary of your pregnancy. Call an OBGYN today to schedule your first appointment, and bring any questions you have written down. A medical team can walk you through each step of your visit schedule.
