The Surgical Techniques Used in Gallbladder Removal
SHARE

The gallbladder is a small organ located beneath the liver that stores and concentrates bile, a fluid that helps the body digest fats. Sometimes gallstones form in this organ, blocking bile flow and causing pain, inflammation, or infection. When these problems become severe or recurrent, a surgeon may recommend removing the gallbladder through a cholecystectomy procedure. The body can function normally without a gallbladder, so removal is a common treatment option for people with ongoing gallbladder disease. Here’s information on the surgical techniques that are used for gallbladder removal:

Standard Laparoscopy Removal

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the most widely used method for removing the gallbladder. Surgeons often prefer it because it uses small incisions rather than one large opening, which tends to shorten recovery time. During the procedure, the surgeon makes a few small cuts in the abdomen and inserts a laparoscope, which is a thin tube fitted with a camera. The camera projects images onto a monitor, guiding the surgeon as they detach and remove the gallbladder through the small openings.

Most patients receive general anesthesia, so they remain asleep throughout the operation. The surgery usually takes one to two hours to complete. Recovery is typically quicker than with older surgical methods, and many people return home the same day or after a short overnight stay. Surgeons advise patients to limit strenuous activity for a couple of weeks while the small incisions heal. After any form of gallbladder removal, dietary adjustments are necessary to support recovery.

Open Cholecystectomy

Open cholecystectomy is an older technique that involves a single, larger incision in the upper right side of the abdomen. Surgeons still use this approach when laparoscopy is not suitable for a particular patient. This may happen when there is extensive scar tissue from previous surgeries, severe inflammation, or unexpected complications discovered during a laparoscopic procedure. The larger incision gives the surgeon a direct view of the organs and more room to work. Recovery from open surgery generally takes longer, and patients often stay in the hospital for several days afterward.

Magnetic-Assisted Alternatives

Magnetic-assisted surgical technology is an emerging option within laparoscopic cholecystectomy, and it is being explored for treating pediatric patients. This technique uses magnets to hold and move surgical instruments from outside the body. Instead of placing several instruments through separate incisions, surgeons can guide certain tools with an external magnet, reducing the number of openings needed.

For children, this approach may translate to fewer incisions and smaller marks on the skin. A child’s smaller abdominal cavity presents unique challenges during surgery, so techniques that minimize incisions can be especially valuable. By controlling instruments magnetically, surgeons gain flexibility in positioning tools within the limited space.

As this technology continues to develop, it may offer pediatric surgeons additional ways to tailor procedures to a young patient’s body. Because this method is still advancing, families should discuss availability and suitability with a qualified surgeon. Not every hospital offers magnetic-assisted technology, and each child’s situation is different.

Choosing a surgical technique depends on many factors, including your overall health, your anatomy, and the severity of your condition. Laparoscopy is the most common surgical approach, while open cholecystectomy and magnetic-assisted methods serve specific needs. A general surgeon can review your medical history and explain which option may fit your situation. If you need gallbladder surgery, contact a general surgeon to discuss your surgical technique options.
