Collaborative Approaches to Managing ADHD in Children
SHARE

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition in children, and it affects attention, impulse control, and activity levels. Since ADHD touches home, school, and social life, many families work with a team of professionals. This is how parents, teachers, doctors, and therapists collaborate to manage ADHD in children:

Behavioral Support

When parents and therapists use the same behavior plan, children receive consistent expectations across settings. Parent training programs teach specific strategies for daily routines to help manage ADHD in children. A therapist explains each technique, and parents practice it at home between sessions. Helpful tools include the following:

  • Short instructions given one step at a time
  • Visual schedules for morning and bedtime routines
  • Personalized reward charts that track specific target behaviors
  • Planned ignoring of minor attention-seeking actions
  • Calm, predictable consequences for broken rules

Track progress in a simple log, and share it with your child’s therapist each month. If a strategy stops working, the team adjusts the plan together. Change one strategy at a time.

Modified School Structures

Teachers see your child in a structured setting for several hours each day. When doctors evaluate ADHD, they may ask teachers to complete rating scales. These forms track attention and behavior in class, and they add detail to parent reports. Share your own observations with the teacher as well.

If your child qualifies, the school may offer an accommodation plan. Some provide classroom accommodations, but others also include specialized instruction. Request an evaluation from the school in writing.

Typical accommodations include preferential seating and extended test time, and some schools allow movement breaks. Ask teachers for regular progress updates. Schedule a team meeting whenever grades or behavior change noticeably.

Prescription Medication Management

Pediatricians and child psychiatrists prescribe ADHD medication. Stimulants are the most common option, but nonstimulant medications are also available. The prescriber usually starts with a low dose, which they adjust over several weeks.  Before each follow-up visit, write down any changes you notice at home, and bring teacher feedback to the appointment as well. During this period, watch for the following details at home:

  • Appetite and meal patterns
  • Sleep onset and total hours
  • Mood changes in the afternoon or evening
  • Headaches or stomachaches
  • Teacher reports on focus during class

At-home Modifications

Small changes at home can make daily life easier for your child and for you. You don’t need to overhaul everything at once. Start with one or two adjustments, and build from there.

Children with ADHD do best when they know what to expect. Set consistent times for waking up, meals, homework, and bedtime. Post a simple visual schedule where your child can see it, and walk through it together each morning. Choose a quiet homework spot away from the TV and other screens. Keep supplies within reach so your child doesn’t have to get up and search for them.

Address ADHD in Children Today

If you suspect ADHD, start by scheduling an evaluation with your child’s pediatrician. Bring notes about behavior at home, and request input from teachers before the visit. Each professional on the team covers a different area of need. Keep all records in one folder, and share updates with every provider regularly.
