The Role of Neurologists in Stroke Recovery
SHARE

A stroke occurs when blood flow to part of your brain is blocked or reduced. Brain cells in that area lose oxygen, and they can stop working within minutes. Neurologists treat conditions of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. After emergency care ends, your neurologist finds the cause of your stroke.

Stroke Type and Diagnosis

Your neurologists first identify the type of stroke you had. An ischemic stroke results from a blocked artery. A hemorrhagic stroke results from a ruptured blood vessel. Each type needs a different treatment, so your neurologist confirms the type before recommending care. A less common type is a transient ischemic attack, or TIA. A TIA causes stroke-like symptoms, but blood flow returns on its own. TIA is a warning sign and raises your short-term risk of a full stroke. Knowing your stroke type helps your neurologist choose the right next steps. An ischemic stroke may call for blood-thinning medication. A hemorrhagic stroke may require a different approach. Your neurologist also discusses your age, medical history, and other conditions. He uses this information to create a plan that fits your specific situation and explains each step so you understand your care.

Procedures for Circulatory Health

Your neurologist may prescribe blood thinners to prevent clots, or he will prescribe statins to lower cholesterol. Blood pressure medicine may also be part of your plan. Managing these conditions takes time, and your neurologist monitors your response to each medication. Some medications need adjusting as your body changes, and he reviews your blood work at regular intervals. If a medication causes side effects, tell your neurologist right away. He can modify your dosage or switch to a different option, and he will explain any change.

Lifestyle factors also play a role in your circulatory and brain health. Your neurologist may recommend changes to your diet, physical activity, or sleep habits. These changes work alongside your medications to lower your stroke risk. He may refer you to other specialists, and they work with your neurologist. This supports your overall health. Following your treatment plan consistently gives you the best chance of a stable recovery.

Skills Rebuilt Through Rehabilitation

After a stroke, your neurologist offers rehabilitation services to help you rebuild affected skills. The effects of a stroke depend on which part of your brain was damaged, and they can range from mild to severe. He makes sure each specialist understands your stroke history and recovery goals. Your neurologist may refer you to one or more of the following therapy types based on your needs:

  • Physical therapy: Addresses strength, balance, and mobility
  • Speech therapy: Targets language, communication, and swallowing problems
  • Occupational therapy: Helps you relearn daily tasks, such as dressing and cooking
  • Cognitive therapy: Supports memory and concentration if those areas were affected
  • Vision therapy: Available if your eyesight was impaired by the stroke
