Bronchial inflammation, also known as bronchitis, occurs when the bronchial tubes become inflamed, causing coughing, mucus production, and occasional chest discomfort. Acute bronchitis commonly develops after a respiratory infection and usually improves within several weeks, while chronic bronchitis involves persistent symptoms. Because symptoms and underlying causes vary, healthcare providers evaluate respiratory health to determine appropriate treatment and management options. Here is more information about what bronchitis is and how it is treated:

Understanding Symptoms

Bronchitis commonly causes a persistent cough that sometimes produces clear, yellow, or green mucus. Inflammation of the bronchial tubes may also contribute to chest discomfort, wheezing, and breathing difficulties. Although acute and chronic bronchial inflammation share several symptoms, chronic bronchitis involves recurring mucus-producing coughs over an extended period. Common symptoms of bronchitis include:

  • Experiencing persistent coughing that produces mucus and sometimes lasts several weeks.
  • Noticing wheezing or whistling sounds while breathing.
  • Developing chest discomfort that includes soreness or tightness.
  • Having mild fever or chills during a respiratory infection.
  • Feeling persistent fatigue or reduced energy throughout the day.
  • Experiencing shortness of breath during physical activity.

Acute bronchial inflammation symptoms generally improve within several weeks, although coughing sometimes continues after other symptoms resolve. Chronic bronchitis involves a productive cough lasting at least three months across two consecutive years. Because persistent coughing has several possible causes, patients should seek medical evaluation when symptoms last beyond three weeks. Severe breathing difficulties, chest pain, or coughing up blood require prompt medical attention.

Identifying Causes

Acute bronchitis commonly develops from viral infections, including those responsible for colds and influenza. These infections cause inflammation in the bronchial tubes, which may lead to coughing and increased mucus production. Although bacterial infections occasionally cause bronchitis, viruses account for most acute cases.

Chronic bronchial inflammation develops through prolonged irritation and inflammation of the bronchial tubes. Cigarette smoking is a leading cause, while repeated exposure to air pollution, chemical fumes, and workplace dust also contributes. Because these irritants affect airway function over time, continued exposure may worsen respiratory symptoms.

Certain factors increase the likelihood of developing bronchial inflammation or experiencing complications. People who smoke, have weakened immune systems, or live with existing respiratory conditions may face additional risks. Young children and older adults also require attention when respiratory infections cause persistent coughing or breathing difficulties.

Treating Bronchitis Effectively

Acute bronchial inflammation treatment generally focuses on managing symptoms while the respiratory infection resolves. Rest, adequate hydration, and humidified air may help relieve discomfort, while certain over-the-counter medications address fever or coughing. Because most acute bronchitis cases result from viral infections, antibiotics are not routinely recommended. Common approaches to bronchitis management include:

  • Getting adequate rest to support recovery during respiratory illness.
  • Drinking sufficient fluids to maintain hydration and help loosen mucus.
  • Using a humidifier to reduce airway dryness and ease irritation.
  • Taking appropriate medications to manage fever, discomfort, or persistent coughing.
  • Using prescribed inhalers to manage airway obstruction when medically indicated.
  • Participating in pulmonary rehabilitation to improve breathing techniques and physical endurance.
  • Avoiding tobacco smoke to limit ongoing airway irritation and respiratory symptoms.

Chronic bronchitis often requires ongoing management based on symptom severity and underlying respiratory conditions. Providers may prescribe bronchodilators or inhaled medications, while pulmonary rehabilitation supports breathing and physical activity. Smoking cessation also forms part of long-term management, and healthcare professionals may provide counseling or additional support.

Schedule a Visit With Your Doctor

Bronchitis symptoms vary in duration and severity, ranging from temporary coughing to persistent respiratory discomfort. Acute bronchitis often improves with supportive care, while chronic bronchitis typically requires ongoing medical management. Because prolonged coughing and breathing difficulties have several possible causes, healthcare providers evaluate symptoms and recommend appropriate treatment options. Schedule a bronchitis evaluation today to discuss persistent respiratory symptoms and receive a personalized treatment plan.
