3 Issues That a Dentist Will Treat
SHARE

Dentists treat a wide range of oral health issues during routine visits; they address existing conditions and help prevent new ones. While every patient’s mouth is unique, certain problems occur regularly, such as cavities and gum disease. Here are three possible issues and how a dentist addresses them:

Contents
1. Cavities and Decay2. Gum Disease3. Tooth SensitivityVisit the Dentist Regularly

1. Cavities and Decay

A cavity is a small area of damage on a tooth’s surface. It forms when plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, builds up and gradually wears away the hard outer layer of enamel. When left unaddressed, this process creates a hole or soft spot that a dentist identifies during a routine exam. Once a dentist finds a cavity, the standard approach is to clean the affected area and place a filling. The filling restores the tooth’s shape and surface so it functions normally during chewing. Many dentists use tooth-colored materials that blend with the surrounding enamel; this keeps the repair discreet and natural-looking.

Regular checkups are key to catching decay early. A dentist may use X-rays to examine spots that aren’t visible to the eye, such as the tight spaces between teeth. Regular visits give your dentist a reliable record of your dental health over time, so they’re able to adjust your treatment plan promptly if something changes.

2. Gum Disease

The gums surround and support the teeth, and their health plays a fundamental role in your mouth’s overall condition. Gum disease begins when plaque builds up along and beneath the gumline, causing redness, swelling, or gums that pull away from the teeth. A dentist checks the gums closely for these signs during each standard exam.

In its early stage, a dentist addresses gum disease through a professional cleaning that removes plaque and hardened deposits called tartar. The procedure is also described as scaling, and it clears buildup that a toothbrush alone is unable to reach. For more advanced cases, your dentist may recommend a deeper cleaning that targets further below the gumline.

Your dentist will also review your at-home brushing and flossing habits. Practical adjustments to your daily routine support the work done during each visit, and small changes add up over time. Keeping gums firm between appointments is a shared effort between you and your dental team. General recommendations may include:

  • Brush at least twice daily using a soft-bristled toothbrush
  • Floss once a day to clear buildup between teeth
  • Rinse with an approved mouthwash for added support
  • Schedule professional cleanings at the frequency your dentist recommends

3. Tooth Sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity describes a noticeable reaction when a tooth comes into contact with something hot, cold, or sweet. This response can relate to worn enamel or exposed surfaces near the gumline, both of which a dentist examines directly. Wear on the chewing surfaces is another common finding, particularly on teeth that absorb significant daily pressure. To address sensitivity, a dentist first identifies the source. Depending on what they observe, they may apply a protective coating, suggest a specialized toothpaste, or recommend a night guard for teeth that show signs of grinding. Each option targets a specific cause, so the approach fits the situation precisely. Tracking when sensitivity occurs and sharing those details with your dentist helps guide a more accurate examination.

Visit the Dentist Regularly

Dentists treat various concerns, including cavities, gum disease, and tooth sensitivity; some also offer cosmetic services like crowns and bridges. Regular visits give your dental team the opportunity to monitor your oral health closely and address changes before they progress. If you’re experiencing tooth pain or other changes, contact your dental office today and schedule an appointment.
